Jason Homan has spent the past 25 years in public relations – writing, speaking, consulting. Over the past seven years, he has focused his efforts within the IT space. Today, he lives on beautiful Cape Breton Island with his wife and their Jack Russell Terriers. His days are taken up with meetings with IT executives and their teams, assisting them with their content strategy, copywriting, and brand messaging.
Over the course of his career, Jason has built and successfully exited two companies. His passion is providing the written assets that others need to do the same. His current role as owner and Creative Director of Luminescent Communications Inc. and its subsidiary, AgencyWriting.com, gives Jason and his team at Luminescent Communications Inc. a creative outlet, delivering both industry standard and cutting-edge written assets.
The clients of Luminescent Communications Inc. include multinational channel partners, mature MSPs, VoIP, SaaS, PaaS, and Cybersecurity Management firms.
It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?
I began my career in public relations and nonprofit administration. Over time, I was drawn to the consulting and copywriting side of things. When presented with an opportunity in the IT sector nearly seven years ago, I saw a perfect fit for my skill set.
I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?
Geography was a challenge in the early days. I live on a remote, but beautiful island in the North Atlantic. So, meeting clients only on Zoom before video conferencing was widely accepted was a hurdle. The second biggest challenge for the business was hiring. Finding top-notch copywriters that also understand the IT space is like finding a needle in a haystack.
Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?
I’m primarily a copywriter and a brand messaging consultant. IT firms come to me because they are looking to clarify their messaging, rebrand, or build out marketing campaigns. Why should someone work with me over the competition? There are some great copywriters out there, for sure. What separates me and my team from other IT copywriters is that we have a full team – so we have the bandwidth – and I can collaborate with our clients on an executive-level, understanding what they need and where they’re coming from.
What’s your best piece of advice for readers who would like to find success in their life?
Find out what you’re good at. (Sometimes that’s not what you want to be good at.) Once you understand your innate talents, build on them and take the small opportunities – they lead to bigger adventures.
Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?
Success is autonomy. Being able to choose my schedule, my work environment, my projects, etc. Part of that is having the autonomy to be a help to others when the opportunity arises – not being too busy to be of service to my fellow man.
What’s next for you?
I like where I am right now. I’m enjoying the journey. My wife is talking about spending more time in Europe, we’ll see if she can convince me. The company’s next stage will be expanding to meet the growing content requests we’re getting from current and prospective clients.
